And, when the Beatles broke up, he wanted to be more than just their much-loved servant. He wanted to be a songwriter and a record producer. In his quiet way, he wanted some of the glory.
The new Mal had begun to manage a little Liverpool group called the Iveys (later to be renamed Badfinger) on behalf of the Beatles. But gentle Mal wasn't cut out for management. In April 1969 his diary reveals he had to approach the Beatles' new American manager, Allen Klein, for a loan of £1,000 for the band. It worried him.
'Situation with Iveys getting a little too heavy for me,' he wrote in his diary. 'Had to tell George I'm broke. Really miserable. I'm in the red and the bills are coming in. Poor old Lil suffers as I don't want to ask Apple for a rise.'
What he didn't know then, and from which he would never profit, was that two of his little group would write one of the classic songs of the time. It was 'Without You', which would become a very big hit for Harry Nilsson.
